Saving Money with Dollar General Digital Coupons

Using digital coupons from Dollar General has been my number one way to save money for a long time now. I am going to teach you the very basics so you can do the same.

First off, let me say that you should sign up for this on the actual Dollar General Digital Coupon website, and NOT download the app. I've had nothing but trouble with the app. Sometimes it doesn't load, other times it crashed completely. I much prefer the website, which can be found HERE. Go ahead and sign up, using a valid cell phone number. Once you sign up, you will receive a text that contains a verification code, so you need to be able to have access to the phone you sign up with.

How to use digital coupons
At the checkout counter, you will see a button on the card reader screen on the bottom right that has the digital coupon logo on it. While the cashier is scanning your items, go ahead and press that button. It will ask you to enter your phone number. Once you do, all of the coupons you 'clipped' will be loaded into their system, and will automatically be deducted from your purchase. Easy, right?

Paper coupons are very different, and I will discuss that in a later post. For now, let's just stick with learning about how to use digital ones. Sometimes you will see a $5 off $25 on the bottom of your receipt. You can use this with paper coupons for savings as well, but you MUST give them the $5 off coupon FIRST, let them scan it, THEN give them any other coupons or it will throw the whole thing off. The paper coupons will take money off, lowering your total. Then the $5 off coupon won't work correctly unless you buy more items, which doesn't really help you save much.

Clipping digital coupons
Dollar General offers bigger savings than other stores because they offer various in-store discounts on top of the manufacturer's digital coupons. Most weeks they offer a $5 off any $25 purchase (pre-tax). Some weeks they offer $3 off a $15 purchase (I LOVE THOSE!!)

Go ahead and look through the coupons on the website and clip a lot of things you will use. Make sure to clip the $5 off $25 coupon. You will also get a $1 off a $1 purchase coupon for being a new member.

Now, this is where you will save the most money: make sure that the items you purchase total as close to $25 as possible. Try not to go over $25 by very much. You want to try to buy items that also have a coupon for a decent amount off. Coupons for $0.25 won't give you much overall savings.

This can take a bit of time to learn, so don't get discouraged if you don't get major savings right away. You will learn what works best for you.

I will try my best to post photos and breakdowns of my shopping trips so you can see how I utilize my digital coupons. Seeing what others purchased really helped me when I was learning.

Here is a shopping trip I made a couple weeks ago, using digital coupons, and 2 paper coupons. I made sure to give the cashier my paper coupons at the VERY end of the transaction.

Before my coupons, the total was $26.05. After coupons, it came to $1.55.

To do this, I first signed up for the Air Wick Fragrant Home newsletter on the Air Wick website. Within 24 hours, I got an email that contained a coupon for $2 off ANY 2 Air Wick products. Print the coupon. Go back to the email, and click the coupon link again. This will allow you to print a second coupon. You can only print 2 coupons per email. I signed up with a lot of emails.Dollar General carries Air Wick air freshener for $1 each.

I used 2 of my Air Wick coupons, a $2 off any 2 Aussie products coupon, a $0.50 off Bounce coupon, a $7 off 2 disposable Schick razor packs coupon, and a $2 off any Colgate twin pack coupon. I also had a $5 off a $25 purchase coupon.

How to save the most money

When I first started couponing at Dollar General, I would go there the night before the date my $5 off $25 (or $3 off $15) coupon would need to be used, and make a list of the things I needed that I had coupons for. I made sure which items were in stock, and made a note of how much they cost. Then back at home, I would write out different lists or various combinations to see which ones would let me save the most money. It's a lot easier to do it this way than to wait until I was actually in the store.

Like I said, I will try my best to post more photos of my shopping trips to help you get a good idea of how to use these coupons.

I look forward to helping you save money!
