Make A Plastic Tablecloth Wreath

5/31/2016

Picture
I absolutely love making something beautiful out of something mundane, and this wreath is my latest creation made from simple items you may never have though to use as a home decoration: plastic tablecloths!

Plastic tablecloths are easy to find, inexpensive, and come in a wide variety of colors so you can make wreaths for any season, to represent your love for your favorite sports team, or even a baby shower.

I buy my tablecloths from The Dollar Tree and WalMart. They are $1.00 or less. I also get my wire wreath frame from The Dollar Tree for $1.00 (WalMart has them for around $3), making this a very cost-efficient way to decorate.

Let's get started!
Picture
What you'll need:
Plastic tablecloths in the colors you like (I use 3 colors, and roughly 6 tablecloths per wreath, so get 2 tablecloths in each color)
A wire frame wreath form
Scissors
Picture
How to make it:
1. First, lay out your tablecloth straight out of the package like shown in the photo above. Cut a strip off of the tablecloth, measuring roughly 1.5 inches wide.
Picture
2. Cut the strip in half.
Picture
3. The strips that you have cut may be folded on one side. This is where the tablecloth was folded to fit into the package. Open up each strip until all layers are flat and you can see the folded seam that runs down the middle. Cut each strip in half again on this seam.
Picture
4. Now we need to cut the strips into petal shapes. Just trim a bit off of each side of the ends of the strips so they have a point. This doesn't have to be perfect at all.
Picture
5. Separate all of the layers of the petals. They will be pretty thin, but will look brighter once you start making the wreath and everything gets squished together.  Repeat all of the steps for each color of tablecloth you are using.
Picture
6. Now comes the fun part: actually making the wreath. Take a petal and gently tie it onto the wreath frame, starting on one of the sections in the center of the wreath.
Picture
7. Because the petals are thin, you need to use two of each color before moving on to the next. For example, tie on 2 red petals, then 2 orange, then 2 yellow. I know things are looking a little funky right now, but the more petals you tie on, the better it will look.
Picture
8. As you tie on more petals, slide them tightly together so they are dense and fluffy. Here is a photo of another wreath I'm in the process of making with baby shower colors in blue, pink and yellow. Continue tying on your petals until all of the wire is covered.

Don't worry if it looks a little rough. We'll fluff it out and make it pretty in just a second.
Picture
9. When you have as many petals tied on as you want, flip the wreath over. Use your fingers to gently push any straggling petals from the back of the wreath through to the front. The back should look like the photo above.
Picture
10. Fluff out all of the petals on the front on the wreath, and you're done! Tie a piece of wire or string to the wreath frame so you can hang it up.

If you happen to make a wreath like this, I would love to see it!

It took 3 table cloths to make the wreath when i did it. I also used a wire clothes hanger instead of the metal frame. When I did it with the clothes hanger i got 4 and 3/4 wreaths out of them. I hope it helps

Hi Kim. I think this is a really neat way to make a wreath. How did you do it out of a wire clothes hanger? I would love to try this for a Christmas wreath. Thanks. Penny

Do you do the ties on all 4 or 5 rows? Or do you tie them on 2 rows together? It looked like you tied one row and then two rows. It looks like that on the back side of picture.

Hi! I only tie them on one row at a time. The wreath was getting rather full, so I did skip a row.

Hi Love this wreath...the red/and gold-yellow colors were my high school colors...fond memories *Sigh*. If a person didn't buy their supplies from dollar store what size of table cloth did you use please? Width x Length. I love how you did your wreath and this would be absolutely weather resistant to rain or snow using plastic. Thank you for sharing with us. Is there an address to follow this blog or tut site as well please? Thank you and have a great day.

Hi there! If you don't shop at Dollar Tree, you can use any standard party-sized tablecloths. I actually picked up a few from WalMart in the party supply section as well.

The address of the overall site is www.ThisSouthernGirlCan.com

In step 1, it says the strips are roughly 1.5 inches wide. I do not measure the length because I just cut the tablecloth straight out of the packaging.

The tablecloth, straight out of the package, is 14" long. Each 1.5" strip you cut from that will be cut in half, giving you a length of 7".

In step 1, it states to lay out the tablecloth straight out of the package. The strip is 1.5 " wide. The tablecloth, straight out of the package, is 14" long. Step 2 says to cut that strip in half, which would give you a length of 7".

This looks really awesome, from boring plain table cloths too! Your decorations would match the place settings this way for sure. To add a little more, you could get some of those individual flowers and put a few in randomly in the wreath as well to add a little more to it if you wanted, though that makes it less simple and cheap but I guess that’s the beauty of crafting really. You can create whatever you like! But I like the idea of maybe adding a few yellow sunflowers in or something like that maybe.
Great post!

Hi:--- just a few tips to make this wreath easier to handle. I found the plastic had a tendency to slide around so I clipped each bundle of 1/2 strips in the center with a clothespin to keep it together. To trim the strips on each end to a point I used my 45mm rotary cutter, held the strips down on the cutting mat under my ruler to hold it steady while being trimmed. This made it easy and saved much crafting time! (p.s.) The points are sharp and crisp.

I used pipe cleaners wrapped around the frame to keep the strips from sliding.

After cutting the strips, you cut them in 1/2 making them 7 inches. Them you open the strips. Then did you say you cut them again at the fold? So when you are done they are actually 3 1/2?

Reply
Ruthi
11/27/2018 11:36:32 am

I think she's referring to the strips that wind up having folds lengthwise because of the way the tablecloth itself is folded to fit in the package. You would open these and cut on the fold lengthwise. The finished size should be about 1.5 inches by 7 inches per strip before cutting the petal cuts.

Great instructions and simple to follow. I'm on my 4th wreath since finding your youtube video on a facebook page called Dollar Tree Craftaholics. I have been decorating our camper in teal and couldn't find a wreath to match. I used your instructions and found two shades of teal and one white plastic tablecloths. Then added a camper sign I found at Dollar General and added teal to it. Looks great! I wish there was some way to post a picture.

Love this! Went to the dollar tree and got a circle wreath, 2 of each color plastic tablecloths (red, white, and blue), and a bow to make a Memorial Day wreath! (Only $8!) I love it! I used all 4 rows of the wreath form and it was worth all the trouble! It looks so full and fluffy! I didn't measure 😬 I just followed your YouTube video about cutting it into thirds. I think the prep for cutting and separating all the "leaves" for the wreath takes the longest...because then it was just a matter of sitting and making knots. Took me a couple hours for 3 evenings.

You need 6 of the rectangle tablecloths to make a wreath, so if you are doing it in 3 different colors then you need 2 of each color, if your only using 2 colors then 3 of each.
